Advice To New Mothers

We finally met up with a couple this weekend that we had to reschedule twice due to the weather. She is pregnant for the first time and we decided to focus on an "Urban Maternity" shoot. We normally do the maternity indoors and wanted to go outside for a fresh new look. Amanda and Matt made it easy to capture beautiful images.

I wanted to post some advice on here and wanted it to be fun.

Advice to New Mothers (Warning: Sarcasm Ahead)

New mothers; they wear sleep deprivation and unwashed hair like badges of honor. They are excited when their little bundle of joy has six wet diapers a day, and smiles at them. Remember these days Veteran Moms?I think it's time to share the advice I wish someone had given me before becoming a Mother. (Or shortly thereafter.) I hope this is helpful to some and that others will not look back in retrospect with regret. Trust me, these tips can apply to grandchildren, or neighborhood kids as well.

If there is something I missed, feel free to leave your own ideas in the comments.

1. Don't Get Comfortable Sitting. As every Veteran Mom knows, the minute you sit after a flurry of work which little eyes have taken in, someone will need something. I, therefore, recommend you master the elusive "counter lean" or the non-committal "wall slouch". Both of these are effective because they offer the benefit of semi-relaxation while keeping you upright. This will confuse your family, as they can only ask for things once you're sitting. You master these, and you're golden.

2. Learn to Fly Under the Radar. Few Moms know their children are born with a freaky sixth sense. They can calculate, to within a few nanoseconds, when their Mother wakes up. It is especially sensitive when you want to read your Bible or exercise. I have developed what I consider a fulll-proof plan. First, sleep on a cement floor without any blankets. This ensures no one will be tipped off by creaking or rustling. Secondly, as much as you may think it necessary, there can be absolutely no breathing. And for heaven's sake, don't even think about flushing the toilet.

3. Electrify Your Bathroom Door. If you're the kind of Mother who likes an uninterrupted shower, this little gem may come in handy. Have the navy seals come and install a special sensor. After you lock the door of your bathroom, it's automatically activated. Now anyone who touches it from the other side will receive a fairly sizable shock. You may also wish to have them install a decibel recognition system to prevent the children yelling to you from the other room.

4. Boiling Water is Your Friend. When your child asks to help you cook, say "Sure!" with confidence. Whip out a pot, fill halfway with water and set on a burner over high heat. (Even if you don't actually plan to use it for cooking.) Ask the child to let you know the minute it starts to boil. Set the child on the counter so it can't get away, then tend to the real cooking duties. The child may get bored and lose their desire to help rather quickly, which is exactly what you want.

5. Don't Teach Them To Speak English. Use the TV as a babysitter often. In fact, don't even speak directly to your child. Ever. Just make sure you sit them in front of foreign language programming. Preferably a language that you don't speak, such as Russian or Farsi. Or that clicking African language. Yes, the satellite dish is a bit of an investment, but with all the money you save by not owning a real bed or having to wash sheets, you can afford it. Think of it as early missionary training for them.

6. Have A Wax Replica of Yourself Made. This way you can take naps or read for extended periods of time under the radar. Make sure the wax figure is pose-able, and can execute the "counter lean" or "wall slouch" effectively. The last thing you need is for 'you' to fall over and have the neighbors hear your child yelling like a crazed maniac in some foreign language because 'Mom' fell over and is unresponsive. Let me also recommend having a voice recording installed that activates on 'unexpected fall'. It should be recorded in your child's chosen language, sound like a hyped-up aerobics instructor, and only ask: "Ok! Who wants to help boil water?!?" Your child should respond by staying quiet and slowly backing away. They may even retreat to a hide-out under their bed. This is good: you can then stash the wax figure away without their knowledge.

7. Employ A Foreign Spy Temporarily. Look on the web and find a foreign spy employment agency. It shouldn't be too hard. Hire one that speaks your child's language, and instruct them to covertly warn your child that 'they' are watching him/her, and if they want to have a positive future in the government of said country, the child cannot allow even a speck of dirt to infiltrate the house. Let them know in no uncertain terms that it is their duty to their countrymen to keep the house clean. Your house will remain spotless with no effort from you. This is especially effective if Russian is your child's language.Feel free to pass these tips onto any new Mother you know. They will be sure to thank you

Farmer's Market Basket

As you all know, we eat pretty healthy around here and sometimes it can be expensive. So we are always looking to cut cost where we can. It is not that we are obsessed with it, but all of our friends and family are always coming to us for answers about what is best to eat. I recently had a friend recommend a local co-op for fresh fruit and veggies that is very affordable. I have to say that I did have my my doubts because it was so cheap. I decided to cowgirl up (mainly because no one else wanted to try it) and give it a whirl. You go every Thursday and pick up a fresh basket of fruit and vegetables for only $15. Everyone wanted to see what was in the basket, so we took a picture and placed it here on the blog. We actually used the corn, bananas, and onion tonight on a recipe that I will post later on here. Yummy! It is a really great deal and a wonderful way to make sure you eat your fruit and veggies! Check the Farmer's Market Basket at the link above (click on the title).

Ok, so it's been more just a day or 2 since the last post. But I'm back and I'm ready to type.

Okie dokie...let's pick up where we left off then....

~~~30 tips for photo success~~~

Part 2

#16 Get a good bag. Find something that's big enough to house your essentials but doesn't get too cumbersome and that's not too bulky. A backpack-style bag is awesome because it keeps your arms free for shooting and fun.

#17 With kids, it helps to show them the images on the LCD screen after taking them. This tactic usually encourages them to ham it up a bit for the next shot. Unless of course, we're talking about MY child...who hams it up on ALL shots :-).

#18 When photographing children, try to get down on their level. I don't want them to ever feel intimidated, so I always talk to them eye to eye.

#19 While sightseeing, shoot buildings and landmarks from the side that the sun is on. If you shoot toward the shady side, your camera will adjust it's exposure so that the building isn't too dark, and them the sky gets washed out. If you shoot from the sunny side, your sky will be bluer.

#20 Learning the settings on your camera. That will decrease the amount of shots you miss because you aren't quite sure how you should have your camera set.

#21 Know when to pack it in when photographing your kids. If the kids are tired, try a change of scenery or wait for later. Sometimes you just have to put the camera away.

#22 Make group shots fun - which generally means choosing a good location or angle. If the subjects like the idea that the photo will be from a unique perspective, they're often more willing to cooperate.

#23 A good trick for getting cute, thoughtful faces from your kids: Ask a question you know they'll need to think about. I like to tell my daughter to yell at least once while I'm trying to take happy shots of her, because she gives great giggly smiles and has sparkly eyes.

#24 Get a tripod. Tripods can be used to hold cameras steady in low-light situations. They also come in handy for working on still-life photos such as flowers. For digital photographers, a tripod lets you frame your photo, then take a step back to take a peek at the LCD without moving the camera.

#25 A sleeping baby is a beautiful baby, so naptime is the best time to photograph him or her. Babies are easy to move around and pose when they are asleep (sometimes). Don't forget to get close-ups of little feet and hands and lips :-).

#26 With a group shot, a simple trick is to be energetic. Family group shots can sometimes be boring and stale. While holding the camera, say something funny about your family that will spark laughter and conversation. Quickly snap those smiles and that interaction. That is what makes your family, so why not show it on film?

#27 How do I make kids sit still? Oooo, I know this one..Duct Tape? Hot glue? :-) No...I don't - but that's the point. Kids should be kids, and that's how you photograph them. They shouldn't be posing, and it's often better if they aren't even looking at the camera. My least favorite shots of my kids are the ones where they're smiling and looking directly into the camera. It's so unnatural.

#28 With kids, sometimes I have to remember to put the camera down and just talk. Then I sneak in shots here and there while we chat.

#29 Find a good spot in your house for light and use that for your portrait spot. You may get lucky and find "that" spot in a room where you have the perfect lighting and you'll never have to use your flash.

#30 Just enjoy taking photos, Really, focus, depth of field, and all that other mumbo jumbo doesn't matter as long as you're preserving the memories that are most important to you.

Well, I don't know about you, but I got some good information from these tips. So, I should get some really great photos now...I'm just gonna have Cherry Berry Studios take them! LOL

I know, I know, I'm such a slacker! But I'm a busy girl during the summer months :-). Probably has a little to do with the fact that I hang out with a 7 year old all day. And by the time I get home, I'm not EVEN thinking about blogging. Nothing personal...just stating the facts.

Speaking of my 7 year old, she started back to school today. I now live with a 2nd grader. How cool is THAT? Check her out...

She's so stinkin cute!Anyway, enough about her :-).

Not sure if I've ever shared this with you before, but I'm a scrapbooker. And as I sat in my rightful spot in the carpool line today, I was reading an old scrapbooking magazine. As I perused the pages I came across a great article. I LOVE sharing tips with our blog audience. And since I've been MIA for a while, I thought this would be a great article to share with our blog friends. You know, to kinda make up for lost time and my lack of posting.

So, without further delay, sit back and enjoy these tips for photo success.

~~~30 tips for photo success~~~

Part 1

Have you ever wanted to pick the brains of your favorite photographers (Lisa & Cynthia, of course)? Well here's some advise from some (other) pros and avid scrapbookers. Read on to get better photos in no time.

#1 Look behind your subject at the background and remove any distractions. Sometimes you can avoid something in the background just by changing your angle.

#2 At events like birthdays, take shots of any and everything related to the event - such as the cake, decorations, gift table, guest arriving, guests singing "Happy Birthday" - and lots of candid shots of everyone interacting.

#3 If you have a digital camera, always take multiple shots (of the same thing) and you'll get some great pics. Thankfully, with a digital camera, that's not as costly as it used to be with those film cameras.

#4 When you're traveling, think about what it is you want to remember about your trip and try capturing those things on film. If the people you vacation with are the thing you care about most, that's what you should shoot. If you're more dazzled by the great scenery, shoot that.

#5 To get great faces from your kids, tell them a joke. If you can make them laugh, you can get some great shots. Or there's always bribery :-).

#6 Having your camera at hand all the time is essential for getting good candid shots. If you have smaller kids, keep the zoom lens handy for those candid shots without them knowing - you can still get some good pretty good close ups.

#7 For big family shots, put the eltest members in the center and add the other members around them all in tight and close, some kneeling, some standing. And snap away while the family is moving into position. More than likely, you'll get some great candid shots in the process!

#8 For kids portraits, cove a small ottoman with black fabric - because kids love to climb. Another trick to get very little kids to smile is to have a big brother or sister stand behind you jumping and playing peekaboo.

#9 Remember, when you're shooting photos of your baby, no matter how much you plan for the session to go perfectly, it's not gonna happen. The key to a great baby photo shoot is patience (NOW you tell me!) Also, less is more. Clothing tends to take so much away from those cute little features, which is the best part of those little babies.

#10 When photographing kids, get closer. You want to see their faces, their expressions. Fill the frame with a face every now and then. Mix it up. Shots of people shown head to toe, with lots of space around, are never our favorite pictures.

INTERMISSION...this is a good time for a potty break or to fill up that glass. I'll wait......;)

...Ok, you ready to continue on? Here we go...

#11 At weddings, look for informal shots of interaction between the bride and groom. Usually the bride and groom are caught up in the chaos, and they get worked up for pictures. Take them aside and let the just be. This will take them away from the mind-set of "OK, I have to smile and pose now." I saw a photo today of this very thing. The photographer took the bride and groom away for some, relaxed/candid shots. And as they were riding the elevator - just the couple and the photographer - the couple snuck a kiss. Of course the photographer got the shot. It was simply beautiful.

#12 If your camera has interchangeable lenses, a 50mm lens is a wonderful addition. It's great in low-light situations, and even a beginner (like me) can get super sharp images with it. And because it's such a low-profile lens, it's easy to tuck your SLR camera right into your purse.

#13 When you're shooting on vacation, don't include too much in your photos. Try to isolate individual objects or subjects (even landscapes). Pay attention to how big the subject is in the viewfinder. If it doesn't take up much space in the frame, you aren't even going to se it on a 4"x6" print.

#14 The secret to a great portrait is to be creative and think out of the box. You can shoot the person from many different angles - not just forward facing. Or you can photograph only a portion of the body or face. Everyone has an interest or something about them that stands out. The trick is finding that unique characteristic and then waiting for the right moment to take the photo.

#15 A trick that's fun to rely on is switching angles. When taking candid snapshots, take one photo straight on, one from ground level, one from overhead and a few from either side. The perspective from which the photo is taken can change the mood or feel of the picture dramatically.

Out of the mouths of babes...

...ARGH!!! I have just been running around like a crazy lady lately. I forget that some errands and just life in general take on a different "dynamic" in the summer, when there's a 7 year old in tow.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE having Jayla around everyday. She's GREAT company and makes for humorous day to day comings & goings. I'll tell ya, I just love this kid.

Case in point, yesterday, we were at Michaels. I'm on the hunt for some chandelier stickers or stamps or stencils, or SOMETHING. I've built a desk for my sewing machine and I want to decorate it with chandeliers. Don't ask me why...I just do and I just like them, ok? ;)

ANYWAY...we're wandering around Michaels and I'm looking for something that either is or resembles a chandelier...trying to get the creative juices flowing. As I'm thinking out loud, I happen to say, "I can't make a stencil because...because, I just CAN'T! I've tried and it ain't happenin!" So Jayla hears my "thoughts", grabs me by the arms and says to me; "MOM! You CAN do it! Don't give up! You've told me not to quit and don't give up. So you can't give up and be a quitter either. C'mon Mom, YOU CAN DO IT!!"

Ok, so as her mother, what do I say at this point? I mean, she's right, I HAVE said that to her. And I'm sure, especially since she's only 7, I'm gonna say it again...and again. But seriously...I HAVE tried and I CAN'T do it!

So after laughing and getting over my shock of what she just said, I grab my daughter and give her a big hug and a kiss on her head. And I say to her...as sweetly as I possibly can; "Honey, you don't understand...I've tried and tried and really, Mommy CAN'T make a chandelier stencil! And not only that, I don't HAVE to...cuz I'm GONNA find one!" lol To which she responds, "Oh mom, I believe in you...you can do it...you just have to TRY!"

Anyway, this "precious moment" as it was, goes on for quite a while. But needless to say, although my daughter called me out, so to speak, the search continues. I WILL find that chandelier stencil or stamp! LOL

So, anyway, last week I had to take Jayla to the doctor because she's had this annoying little cough for a few weeks now. She also complained of her left ear feeling, "stopped up - like when we were on the plane". And since she doesn't seem to be able to hear me that well when I call her name (unless, of course, I'm calling her to see if she wants some ice cream or to go to the park, lol), I thought I'd better get it checked out.

We go to the movies to see Madagascar 2 that morning (VERY cute movie, by the way) then head to the doctor. Only for them to discover that she not only has an ear infection, but also a sinus infection. GREAT!!! We are then sent to the pharmacy to get her prescription of Amoxicillian. ONLY to find that it's gonna cost us $60! Little did I know that we now have a $50 deductible on prescriptions every year. ANYWAY, I paid it we went on our way. 2 doses into the meds, it dawns on me, "Publix (grocery store) has FREE antibiotics with a prescription!" ARGH!!! I could've saved us $60! Oh well, whatcha gonna do? We are now 8 days into the meds and only 2 more days to go. The coughing has pretty much gone away. However, Jayla claims that she might still have the ear infection though. (She knows this because she's gonna be a pediatrician one day, lol) I ask her why and she says, "Because I still can't hear YOU that good! I can hear daddy, I just can't hear you that good!" You're kidding me, right? LOL
I think she's gonna milk this one...

Shooting Fireworks

On the 4th of July, the heat of the day eventually comes to a close and the cool night air starts to settle in...unless of course you live in Georgia :-). The sun begins to fade just in time for the fireworks to start. It's the perfect "ooh-ahh" note to end the day with, and I'm gonna help you capture it with these great tips!

8 tips for successful fireworks shots

1. ARRANGE for a tripod or another secure object to rest your camera on so it won't move. The best fireworks photos require long exposures that will show camera shake if you try to hold the camera by hand. You may also find it helpful to use an electronic remote to release the camera so you don't even have to touch it.

2. SET UP your tripod and camera ahead of time. Find a spot where tree branches or people won't block your view of the sky. Decide if you want the landscape and horizon line to show or if you want the image to just show the sky. My rule of thumb is that if a great cityscape or neat river appears in the foreground and will enhance the fireworks shot, us it. If the location isn't pretty or unique, stick to the view of the dark sky and bright fireworks.

3. START with a camera focus of "infinity". If you're attempting this setting with a point-and-shoot camera, use the landscape mode or the mountains icon so the camera will focus far away for you. Then, as the fireworks begin, look through the viewfinder and focus on the first firework itself - the focus shouldn't be far off from infinity, but you want to see if you've got it right. I recommend manual focusing, because automatic focusing can be tricky for cameras in the dark...trust me on this one :-).

4. SET your camera to a very closed aperture, or a high number like f/16 or f/22. Even if the fireworks move slightly forward or backward as you take pictures, your image will still be sharp.

5. SWITCH your camera to the "B" (or bulb mode) setting to control shutter speed and better capture the movement of the fireworks. You can keep your camera shutter open for as long as you hold the shutter button down. When you hear the fireworks exploding, press the shutter button, keep it pressed down while the fireworks burst, and continue to hold it down until the scene fades.

Exposing for fireworks is not an exact science. Look at how bright your first photograph is to determine if you need to hold the button down for a shorter or longer time. If the photograph isn't light enough, you'll need to keep the shutter open longer. If the photograph is too bright and blurs too much, let go of the shutter button earlier than your previous attempt.

6. METER and expose for the light. If the foreground of your picture includes a building or cityscape with light, meter the light on the building and expose for it rather than using the bulb mode. You don't want huge, bright spots taking over your picture.

SPARKLER PHOTOS AT HOME

If you're enjoying fireworks at home and want to take great pictures of your children with sparklers, here are two recommendations to accompany the 6 tips above.

7. SHOOT sparkler photos at twilight. It's dark enough to be fun, but light enough to use a high ISO, open aperture and fast shutter speed to capture a crisp image of your child standing with a sparkler.

8. USE the sparkler to creat light paintings and to show movement. You'll want to wait unti it's a little darker out, plus you'll need a tripod for the longer exposure. Once the child is ready, have him/her stand in one place and focus on him/her. Then hand them the sparkler and let them be creative doing swirls or drawing circles. (Just remember that if he writes his name in the air, it will be backwards in the photograph.) The childs image will blue as he moves, often resulting in a lovely, creative 4th of July image.

Penny-Pinching Photography Tips

Leave your wallet at home - you don't need fancy equipment to take great photos.

In this economic slump, most of us are tightening our budgetary belts and kicking the disposable income to the curb. (I know I am!) While we'd all like to have a few more dollars in our pockets, learning to simplify - to reduce, reuse and recycle - can be as invigorating as a long, sweat workout. The process can be a bit painful, but the results are well worth the effort. Don't let your wallet keep you from taking the best photos you can.

MYTH #1: I need top-of-the-line, fancy-schmancy equipment to be a great photographer.
Not true. I've had the same Kodak camera (EasyShare Z740) for over 2 years now. (Just purchased a new Kodak EasyShare M913 for my recent vacation for $89.99...still an inexpensive camera) But sure, I drool over the catalogs when they come in the mail, but my equipment doesn't define me. Lighting, post-processing, exposure and creative composition are just as important as my camera body and lenses. Get the most of what you've got by studying your camera manual and foraging online for free tutorials, tips and tricks.

MYTH #2: To snap a jaw-dropping, WOW photo, the location has to be perfect.
Explore your community with new eyes. Pay attention to that weathered, abandoned old barn. Notice the way the light filters into that tiny alley and hits the ivy-covered walls. Ask if you can take a few pictures inside that adorable little boutique or bakery. Take note of the poetic way that lonely, two-lane road snakes through the hills. Did you know there was a park tucked in behind that neighborhood? Admire the brightly painted murals on the side of that building. Laugh at and document those hilarious signs you come across in your city.
Photo dates are a fun, free way to grow as a photographer. Your community is an oyster; there are pearls hiding in the most unassuming, ordinary places. Grab your camera, head out solo and capture the world around you. Want to experiment with modern portraiture? Invite a significant other, child or friend to model for you. Schedule a photo date with another camera entusiast and take turns photographing each other's families; that way you're in a picture once in a while too!
Go on a photo date each month, and your skills will dramatically improve as you step outside of your comfort zone and photograph new people, places and things. Nothing compares to self-discovery; get out there and engage in the craft!

MYTH #3: I have to print every photo I take! (this sounds like me.)
Most of us seem to be on one side of coin or the other. I let photos sit on my hard drive for months - years even - before I either ship them off to the printers or print them myself here at home. More often, though, it seems people head to their local box store's one-hour photo and print off a bunch of 4x6 pictures that eventually end up in a random album or junk drawer

"Photograph what's typical now-you'll treasure it later."

Have you ever stopped and taken the time to think about what you do on a daily basis? Sure, you're probably saying to yourself, "who wants to know about MY day?" Well, I have an answer for that...your kids! Or your grandkids for that matter. How cool would it be to do a photoshoot of you and/or your family simply...living life? Who knows, you may capture photographs and daily details that you and your family will treasure for years and years to come.

In a few years, it may be fun to look back at photos of you braiding your daughters hair (and her facial expressions during the process). Or the backyard water fight your husband had with the kids. Or your toddler and puppy finally taking a nap.

Here are a few tips on how to accomplish this type of photo shoot.

1. For professional results, hire a photographer.
You'll pay extra for the expertise, so check portfolios (or blogs/websites) beforehand to make sure you love their work. Also, consider how comfortable you are with this person since he or she will spend an entire day with you. Make sure they capture the spontaneity and personality of each person being photographed (May I suggest Cherry Berry Studio & Design?) :-) They are creative and amazingly fun to be around.

2. Consider doing the photo shoot yourself.
It will take more planning on your part, but it can be done. Make sure a friend or neighbor can take the group shots of your entire family. Or, make a trade with a friend who takes great photos - she'll take your photos and you'll take hers.

3. Plan ahead.
Create an index card for each person and write down activities that pertained to that person. (Don't forget to include yourself in these photos.) Also make a card for family group shots. Next, color-code each person's card by room (or outside location) and assign each activity a time slot. This will save a lot of time - no going back and forth between rooms and heading outside for another shot. This is supposed to be fun, not stressful!

4. Check your camera.
Lens clean? Batteries charged/have fresh ones available? Enough space on your memory card(s)? Confirm beforehand that your equipment is ready to go.

5. Prepare your subjects.
Make sure people are rested, relaxed and not hungry. Let them know quickly what you're hoping to photograph and when.

6. Include a "photo studio" setting for fun.
Hang some white paper on a wall in a spare room and take some close-up personality shots. (A white sheet works well too.) Have everyone grab a favorite or comfy chair for these shots.

7. Use the occasion to get family group shots as well.
Have grandparents come by so they can be included in a few shots. This may also be a good time to get that perfect Christmas card picture. While you have a captive audience, get as many shots as possible.

Prepare well, then relax and let the day happen. You'll get the best results if the photos aren't overly structured. Candid shots sometimes make the best photos. Just be yourselves - and do what you normally do during the day. You and your loved ones will get a big kick of the pictures years from now looking back at where you lived - what you wore - what you did and how you worked & played. A typical day can tell SO much! Let the camera help tell your story. Trust me, you'll be forever grateful that you took the time!

Summer Camera Fun

Photography is an amazing art form. It get children and adults alike excited about art and more in tune with the simple pleasures of life. It offers a fantastic opportunity to learn more about each member of your family-to get their unique perspectives. Following are 3 photo scavenger hunts. They're perfect antidotes for a boring day, a blank scrapbook page (if you scrapbook) or a family in the doldrums. They're also a fun way to teach your children about photography. Try one (or all three) for yourself!

Before you begin: here are 6 tips before you hand your child a camera.

1. Talk about the importance of using the neck or wrist strap.
This will protect your camera if the child accidentally drops it. Show your child that the proper way to hold a camera is with the right hand pushing the shutter button and the left hand supporting the camera from below. With little children, you'll want to stand nearby as they take photos, but be sure to let them approach the subject on their own terms!

2. If needed, show your children how to turn on the camera and use the settings.
Teaching how to switch from auto mode to the mountain, person or flower icon will greatly improve the child's landscape, portrait and close-up shots, respectively.

3. Teach the child how to look for a focal point.
Then, show your child how to check the photo background for any distracting objects.

4. Talk to the child about lines.
Looking back at all my first photos, I realized that none of the horizon lines were straight. They were all alightly askew because I wasn't holding the camera straight.

5. Encourage quantity.
With today's digital cameras, a child can take as many photographs as desired. Explain how photographing the same object from different angles can make an amazing difference!

6. Stand back and let your child go for it.
(unless he or she needs extra help supporting the camera). Try not to give advice or frowning at the child's choices-it's so rewarding to see what results without input from you! This builds creative confidence, and that's a wonderful thing.

Do you have a person in your life who is difficult to photograph? I think we all do. Being a scrapbooker, I've even done layouts of one or more of my kids featuring the journey to that "just right" shot.

After numerous attempts to have that perfect photo session, I've learned a few ways to help my subject(s) relax when I bring out the camera.

Be a chatterbox. When the camera is out, it's natural to fidget, fix hair, and be self-conscious - especially if surrounded by silence. Help your subject relax by bringing the focus to you. I babble a lot anyway...but also while taking photos to distract my subject from the click of the shutter.

Snap throwaway shots. Take advantage of your digital camera by shooting several practice pics before you get down to business. The point of these photos isn't composition-it's about putting your adult subject at east. By the time you've taken 100 or more, the initial resistance has worn off.

Keep kid shoots as short as possible. The opposite is true for children. You may not have their attention for long, so don't be discouraged if you don't get a good shot on the first go-around. Take a break and try another session later. And it's easier to work one-on-one with kids in their natural environments, such as their bedrooms, playrooms or outdoors.

Bring a buddy. If all else fails, ease your subjects into their surroundings by taking a photo with someone they like-a spouse, child, parent or even a pet. Knowing that the attention isn't just on them can help them relax.

What is the Heart Project?
Cherry Berry Studio & Design and Burt Designs wanted to give back to the community by raising awareness of congenital heart defects (CHD). Cynthia Billingsley and Lisa Swanson with Cherry Berry Studio and Design, and Theresa Burt with Burt Designs, were confronted with CHD when Cooper, Lisa and Cynthia’s nephew, was born in 2007 with double outlet right ventricle (DORV) and VSD. Theresa’s daughter, Gracen, is also being cared for at Sibley Heart Center for a heart issue. Cooper was born with three holes in his heart. His parents, Nancy and Scott, did not know he had a CHD until a few days after birth. This sudden and unexpected news came as a surprise and it spurred a desire to raise awareness of congenital heart defects. We are currently booking sessions for our 2010 calendar. I'm ready for my close-up!

A popular shot in photography is the close-up, where you physically move in close to your subject. With today's cameras, however, you can go one step better: the "macro" shot. This lets you easily capture the image with your camera that is equal or larger in size than the subject being photographed. The camera will do a lot of the work for you!

Fill in the frame for stunning results:

To get the best results, move in closer and use the macro lens on your digital SLR or the macro mode on your point-and-shoot camera. (The mode is identified by its picture of a flower.) You can also get a decent close-up with a traditional camera lens - just check your camera manual for specifics on your camera's ideal camera-to-subject distance for macro shots. With most lenses, you'll need to shoot from a distance of at least 15" - 21" from your subject. Take pictures any closer and they'll come out blurry.

1. Fill the frame with your subject. Getting close shifts emphasis from the overall form and lets you focus instead on shape, composition and texture. Here, the photograph of the flower becomes less about the object as a whole and more about the composition.

2. Watch aperture, length of lens and distance from the subject. Working together, these three items affect depth of field (how much of your picture is in focus). This becomes especially important with working with a macro lens because the closer you are to your subject, the smaller the depth of field becomes.

For example, if you shoot a picture of a person from 10 feet away and use an aperture of f/2.8, more of the person and background will be in focus than if you use the same aperture to shoot a picture of a person from 2 feet away. Similarly, if you were only a few inches from your subject and used that aperture, only one dot of the photo would be in focus. So, to keep a lot of your picture in focus, use the really high aperture like f/11 or f/16. To allow more "blurred" area, use a lower aperture like f/14. Either way, make sure your point of focus is where you want the image to be the sharpest.

3. Use a tripod. With a macro lens, the closer you get to your subject, the more light you need. To get more depth of field, you'll also need a larger aperture, such as f/11 or f/16. When taking photographs up really close, you may need a tripod for longer exposure without motion blur or ring/macro flash.

While getting really close with a lens may seem a little complex at first, with a little practice you'll get amazing results. Don't be afraid to fill your frame! You'll be drawn in and get a new perspective with each click of the shutter.

The best April Fools' pranks are all about getting laughs, not getting someone's goat. To fuel your own foolishness, here are ten silly tricks that will have everyone in stitches.

Start your day calling the kids “mom” and “dad.” Let them be in charge for a while.
Reverse your meals: supper for breakfast, breakfast for supper.
After breakfast, go straight into the bedtime routine. Delight in your children’s confusion.
Pack a lunch for school with an apple and gummy worm attached.
Fill juice cup with lemon jello and let set for their juice at dinner time.
Serve cupcakes for dinner and hamburgers for dessert.
In the evening, spoon whipped topping or icing on the kids’ toothbrushes and call them in to brush their teeth.
Crumple up newspaper and stuff it into the toes of Dad's shoes.

Okay, so last week I was approached by my sister in law to make a cake for my 16 year old nephew. She said you are a really great cook, and no pressure! So, as I hung up the phone, I thought, what kind of cake does a 16 year old boy want? Again, no pressure! As researched recipe after recipe, she called back and said that it would have to be enough for about 30 people. What?!?! Okay, so nothing fancy, just vanilla and chocolate. Done. Robert and I head into the kitchen prepare the cake and frosting - my question is how do you taste the cake once it is done so no one else will see the sampling. The cake is now done and frosted and it looks plain and average. I am thinking do you decorate a cake for a 16 year old? Robert saves the day - and he puts a "G" for Georgia Bulldogs. So here you go - and the crowd goes wild! YAY!!!

Spring photo taking tips

Alright folks, all of the calendars in my house are displaying that, as of last Friday, March 20th, it is now OFFICIALLY SPRING!!!

And the crowd goes WILD!!!!

Now you know what that means...it's Spring picture taking time. However, if you live in Georgia, you'll have to dance through a few raindrops every now and again. But it'll be SO worth it.

This time of year reminds me of a cute poem my mother use to say to me when I was little. Tell me what you think...

"Spring has sprung, the grass has riz...I wonder where the flowers is."

Call me crazy, but for some reason, I just found that funny. But you know what's not so funny? Not capturing that perfect Springtime moment. I don't know about you, but I'm always in search of tips to help me get THAT picture. Here's a few that may helps us all...

Tip #1 Notice the lighting - To create that perfect still-life photo this spring, set your object near a window with soft lighting coming through. (If you can't see harsh shadows on the wall or the floor, that's the light you want.) You'll achieve soft, even light with nice shading, creating beautiful depth in your photos.

Tip #2 Try a wide angle - While wide-angle lenses are normally thought of as landscape lenses, you can create fun portrait looks with one. When you use a wide-angle lens or the widest part of your point-and-shoot camera, the lens will distort whatever is closest to you. This gives a fun, almost cartoonish feeling to the photo.

Tip #3 Get low to the ground - Spring brings along with it, Easter. And in turn, Easter eggs. Try placing colorful eggs on the grass and get down low with them. Holding the camera close to the ground, you'll get a fun view of the crisp blades of grass in front of the brightly colored eggs. Just be sure to get out of the way quickly...you don't wanna get trampled by all those treat seeking kiddos :-).

Tip #4 Look up - Easter isn't the only photo opportunity this month. Don't forget all the new flowers that are blooming and don't forget to look up! Remember, the trees are also blooming. Shooting into the sky can be difficult, but not if you know what you're doing. Simply stand under the tree you're wanting to take a picture of, remembering not to look into the sun, and snap the shot. That's it! Trust me, you'll be pleased with this angle.

Tip #5 Watch the horizon line - Remember, photographing your children in a beautiful landscape is also a great way to capture spring. (April is a great time of year to visit local gardens and farms with your family for fun photo opportunities.) To get the perfect landscape photo, it's best to have two-thirds land and one-third sky or two-thirds sky and one-third land instead of chopping the image in half with the horizon line in the middle.

Photographing spring is a great way to remember all the things you love about the beauty of the new season. Capture the beauty through your lens this spring!

Photography Tips for Beginners

Okay, so we have gotten a little behind on our tips so I am going to post a few more for you today.

Buy a UV filter for each lens you own. It's easier to replace a scratched lens filter than it is to replace your actual lens.

In addition to UV filters, other important pieces of equipment should include a sturdy tripod and a remote release. They both come in handy for taking photographs that require long shutter speeds. For example night photography or slow motion water.

You can never have enough SLR / DSLR photography magazines and books to learn from. The best ones will explain what camera settings were used, along with each photograph displayed.

They recently found out that he has a lot of heart complications and is now fighting for his life. He has spent the last month in the hospital. This a group that we are very passionate about - Innocence Atlanta - and it is also a topic of conversation no one likes to talk about or even knows it is happening right here in Atlanta. Please read below and contact Lt. Gov Casey Cagel.

The word around the State capitol is that Senate Bill 91 is not going to get to the floor for a vote because the Lt. Gov. believes it is a tax and made a campaign promise of no new taxes this year. Apparently, Monday March 9 is the last day to tell the Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle to vote to enact this FEE on strip club patrons to help victims of sexual exploitation.

As you know:
Atlanta is in the top 14 cities in the US for child prostitution.

There are more strip clubs per capita in Atlanta than in Vegas.

Those who work daily to get these girls free of slavery say the toughest part of their job is finding a place for them since they are not criminals -- they are not prostitutes, they are BEING prostituted against their will. This bill would free up funds for housing, counseling, all kinds of aid. I have talked to these workers personally that this is their greatest need.

Get ready for your close up

We all know that, regardless of where you live, it's getting to be that time of year where our kids are in some sort of program, either at school or at church...or whereever. And if you're anything like me, you'll know that this can sometimes be a frustrating task.

Well, fear no more...it's time to
SNAP YOUR STAR!!!

Performances often occur in low-light situations that make capturing that special moment difficult. Here are a few tips to help you photograph the event.

Use a tripod. Steady your camera on a tripod (or anything else that is stationary) to minimize shaky hands and blurring.

Bump up the ISO. If the lighting is less than stellar during the performance, raise the ISO as high as possible - 800 or highter is best - to let in more light.

Choose the right mode/setting. If you use the automatic modes on your camera, look for a night setting (usually, it's a moon icon).

Go backstage. No matter how hard you try, sometimes it may not be possible to get properly lit photos. Instead, snap some shots beforehand, backstage or just after the performance to remember the event.

Get close. Most flashes illuminate an area only 9 - 15 feet in front of you, so get close to the action if you're going to need a flash.

Experiment with your camera's settings.

Your point and shoot may be more flexible and powerful than you know. Once you have read the manual for help deciphering all those little symbols, try to explore by shooting your subjects with multiple settings to learn what effects you like. When you’re looking at your photos on a computer, you can check the EXIF data (usually in the file’s properties) to recall the settings you used.

A Recipe Worth Trying

Spring Noodle Stir-Fry with Asparagus and Walnuts

1/4 cup sesame oil
2 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped garlic
1 1/2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh ginger
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper
1/4 pound vermicelli or capellini pasta
1 cup walnuts coarsely chopped
1 onion coarsely chopped
1 pound asparagus cut in 1 inch pieces
1/2 sugar snap peas halved

1. In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons sesame oil, the vinegar, soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and crushed red pepper.

2. In a pot of boiling, salted water, cook the pasta until al dente; drain.

3. Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the walnuts and toast, 2 to 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl, wipe out the skillet and heat the remaining 1 tablespoon sesame oil over high heat. Add the onion and asparagus and cook until tender. Add the sugar snap peas and sesame oil sauce; cook for 1 minute over high heat. Lower the heat to medium, add the pasta and cook stirring until heated through, 2 minutes. Top with walnuts.

Photography Tips for Beginners

Lisa and I are really working hard on the blog to bring it up to date. Some how or another it just got pushed aside while we focused on a lot of other projects. This month we decided to give blogging a real chance. It has been fun and a learning experience as well. We are going to be posting photography tips through out the month for beginners. If there is anything else you would like to see on our blog let us know. If you have any tips yourself or feedback, please let us know!

Okay, so tip #1 - This may seem like a no brainer, but...Don't throw your camera manual away. It will become your new best friend. Read it as often as possible, especially in the first couple of months after purchasing your DSLR camera. Always store it somewhere handy. For example in your camera bag. The thought of even reading the manual may intimidate you, but don't let it. There is some very useful stuff in there.

Move Over Martha!

I have been recently talking with the kids about starting up a vegetable garden this spring. So the plan is to give Martha a little run for her money. We have searched the world over the best gardening books the library has to offer. Our most favorite is one called Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, so good we went ahead and ordered it on Amazon. Its great for those who want to garden but don't have a lot of space. So we begin our garden with lots of hope and optimism. Here is a picture that Ava drew on the back of her menu of us walking in the garden. Jake's is slightly enhanced with big muscle's for him and his dad from eating all of the vegetables. So wish us luck and let me know if any of you greenthumbs have any tips!

Cooper Heart Calendar!!

Family Portraits and Infrared Wedding

This weekend we had the opportunity to be a part of the Lancaster/Segars wedding. What a beautiful bride! We enjoyed watching to great people unite as one. We also shot some infrared photography because there were so many flowers and we thought it would look beautiful. Judge for yourself! More to come soon.

Also, we got to capture a beautiful family. The kids had fun in the sand. The early evening was so pretty, unlike our first date...we had to reschedule. Thanks for the opportunity to capture your family.

Been Busy!

Boy, I checked the blog today and realized the last blog was from June! So sorry! We have been busy...we are currently working on designing the Cooper Heart Calendar. We are trying hard to include all the families that participated because your stories are so powerful. We have also been working with Strasburg Children's clothing to organize a day to do silhouettes and portraits. More information is available at the Strasburg Children's clothing store. It will be a limited time offer but just in time for Christmas!

I know it may seem early but we are starting to book up for our Christmas portraits. Our cut off date for orders will be December 1st. We want to make sure that your orders are in by the time Santa comes! We are looking forward to creating a special Christmas card this year. Call us for available dates to schedule your family portraits.

Two year old triplets

So, our little triplets in the basket are now 2 years old. We can't believe it! They are just precious. We are posting two favorites. With triplets, you get the good with the bad. The first portrait just makes us laugh. The boys are crying and the leader of the pack is pouting. Then in the next portrait they are just really enjoying the balloons and having fun. We really have enjoyed watching these little ones grow.

I had to post some of my favorites. These little ones are just so much fun to capture. Thanks Judy for letting us watch your little ones grow! They have grown so much and just get more and more precious as the years progress.

The little boy at the top was our 15 minute session. His mom told us that he'd be willing to let us take his portraits but we only got about 15 minutes. Sure enough mom knows best!

Fun In The Rain!

We want to thank everyone who came out to meet us at the Taste of Marietta. This is a picture of us (Cynthia and Lisa) working really hard at The WC booth. Theresa was unable to partake in the festivities due to her not feeling well, or she so she said, we are not sure if she chickened out because of all the rain predictions or if she knew we were going to be right next to a pastry booth. As you can see by the umbrella and the wet jeans in the picture it not only rained, it poured! But not even rain could stop the fun that was to be had and the food to be ate. This was our first appearance at the Taste of Marietta, and we had a blast and definitely will be back next year. So thanks again for coming out to meet us and we hope that you all had as much fun as we did! We really missed you Theresa, hopefully you will be feeling better next year!

Heart Transplant

Here's Lilly...She is just was so sweet! She is our first heart transplant baby. She got her new heart at the tender age of just 5 months. She is doing great and loved the camera. She would be crying and we'd bring the camera out; all smiles for Lilly. Thanks for sharing her story with us all.

Cooper Heart Project

Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for your response to our Cooper Heart Project. We have been overwhelmed with responses and haven't been able to call everyone back, but each of you is precious to our project and we will be calling you this week. Every shared story and beautiful picture of your little ones has us has touched us. We have decided to extend our shooting days so that we can include more families. The calendar project is sure to have such impact with the powerful stories and strength these children have all endured.

We have compiled all the responses during the past two days and will be calling families this week. We have reserved our photo shoots for Thursdays and Fridays for the following month. Most of the sessions will take place in Acworth, GA. We are considering doing one location shoot in or around Atlanta, which may be reserved, for the older children.

After your session has been confirmed, we will be sending/emailing out a form to be completed prior to your session. The form will include information regarding your child, their heart condition, testimonials, and inspiration for other parents, release to use pictures, and contact information. The details in the form will be used to design the calendar. Because all the children in the calendar are 18 and under, we will be protecting their precious identities.

After all the sessions have been completed, we will begin the design process for the 2009 calendar. It should be available by October 2008. This is a tentative timeline and we will keep you all informed. Thank you all again for your willingness to support a wonderful organization.

Cooper Heart Project

When we think of Valentine's Day we think of hearts. So we want to honor little hearts that are full of big love. We are working on a little project in honor of little Cooper who was born with three holes in his heart. He had them successfully closed in November 2007 by Sibly Heart Center. We are creating a calendar with pictures of children with heart defects. If you know any children from newborn to 18 years of age that were born with or have any kind of heart defects we want to do something to bless their hearts. We are offering a complimentary photo session and an 8x10 to all parents and children who respond by February 28, 2008. These portraits will be used for the calendar.

We've been busy and loving it! We had so much fun with these families. The first one is a beautiful senior; we have so many favorites from her session but had to post just these two. The last portrait of the twins laughing together is one of our favorites. We've been photographing this family for 3 years now and enjoy watching them grow. They loved blowing bubbles and playing the garden. We got chased off by the mosquitos and we had bug spray on! We are starting to book for September 2007. Please keep in mind that we get booked quickly for Christmas pictures and our deadline for Christmas orders is November 30. We look forward to being a part of your families memories for Christmas this year.
